Tanzania Safari Packing List: What to Bring (& What to Leave Behind)

Landscape from our Tanzania travel collection
FROM THE LUCKY WILD PHOTO NOTEBOOK

The Golden Rule: Pack Light, Pack Neutral

Every experienced safari traveller will tell you the same thing: you will pack too much for your first safari and realise it on day two. The ideal Tanzania safari packing approach is one carry-on sized bag (most bush planes have a strict 15kg soft bag limit) in neutral colours. Leave everything you won't use in Arusha storage.

Clothing: What Colours and Fabrics?

Safari clothing should be neutral in colour: khaki, beige, olive, tan, grey, and brown. Avoid bright colours, white (gets dusty instantly), and black (attracts tsetse flies in some parks and absorbs heat). Camouflage patterns are not permitted in most Tanzanian national parks — leave those at home.

The Essential Clothing List

A quick checklist for a 5-7 day safari.
3–4 shirts
Lightweight, neutral-coloured. Long sleeves for sun protection on game drives.
2 pairs of trousers
Lightweight convertible trousers (zip-off to shorts) are ideal for variable temperatures.
1 fleece or light jacket
Essential for early morning game drives and Ngorongoro Crater where it can be very cold.
Walking shoes
Comfortable closed-toe shoes or light hiking boots for walking safaris.
Wide-brimmed hat
Essential for open-vehicle game drives. The sun is intense near the equator.
Sunglasses
Polarised lenses recommended for open vehicle game drives.
Swimwear
For lodges with pools and the Zanzibar beach extension.

Health & Safety Essentials

Sun cream (SPF 50 minimum), insect repellent (DEET-based for best protection), anti-malarial medication (consult your doctor before travel), hand sanitiser, personal prescription medications with extra supply, blister plasters, and a basic first aid kit.

Photography Equipment

A telephoto lens (200–500mm equivalent) will give you dramatically better wildlife shots from a vehicle. Bring more memory cards and batteries than you think you'll need — you will shoot more than you expect. A beanbag for stabilising your camera on the vehicle window edge is invaluable.

Questions from the notebook

What is the luggage limit on bush flights in Tanzania?

Most charter/bush flights have a strict 15kg limit per person in soft-sided bags. Hard-shell suitcases are typically not accepted. Lucky Wild Safaris will advise you on the specific limit for your itinerary.

Do I need to bring cash to Tanzania?

Yes — US dollars are widely accepted and often preferred. Bring a mix of small and large bills, as change can be difficult. ATMs are available in Arusha but not inside the parks.
