Planning to climb Mount Kilimanjaro? Choosing the right time of year can make a real difference to your trekking experience. Weather conditions affect trail surfaces, visibility, temperatures, and how comfortable you feel during the summit attempt.

Located in northern Tanzania, Mount Kilimanjaro rises to 5,895 metres above sea level. Although you can climb it throughout the year, some months generally offer better conditions than others.

For most trekkers, the two main periods to consider are January to early March and June to October. The best choice depends on whether you prefer clearer weather, fewer crowds, or a quieter mountain experience.

When Is the Best Time to Climb Mount Kilimanjaro?

January to early March: A good balance of weather and crowds

This period is often a good choice for travellers who want generally favourable trekking conditions without the busiest mid-year crowds.

  • Weather: Conditions are often relatively dry, with clear mornings and occasional showers.
  • Views: You may enjoy excellent mountain scenery and clear summit views, although cloud cover can change quickly.
  • Crowds: Generally less busy than the July and August peak, though popular routes can still have plenty of trekkers.
  • Who should consider it: Climbers seeking a balance between weather conditions and trail traffic.

February is often a particularly attractive month. March becomes less predictable as Tanzania’s long rainy season approaches, especially later in the month.

June to October: The main climbing season

This is the longer, popular window for climbing Kilimanjaro, with generally drier conditions and good opportunities for mountain views.

  • Weather: Trails are often drier, although rain and strong winds remain possible.
  • Temperatures: Nights at high camps and the summit can be extremely cold.
  • Crowds: July and August are particularly busy, especially on popular routes.
  • Who should consider it: Travellers who prioritise generally favourable weather and can book their trek in advance. September and early October can be attractive alternatives for those hoping to avoid some of the busiest weeks while staying within the main dry season. Conditions still vary from year to year.

When Is the Rainy Season on Kilimanjaro?

Tanzania has two main rainy periods that affect climbing conditions. Rain does not make a climb impossible, but it can make trails muddier, reduce visibility, and increase the challenge of staying warm and dry.

March to May: The long rains

  • Expect wetter trails, particularly in the forest zone.
  • Clouds can limit views and make navigation more challenging.
  • April and May are generally the wettest months and are less suitable for trekkers who want more predictable conditions.

November to early December: The short rains

  • Rain showers can make some sections slippery.
  • Weather is often variable rather than consistently wet.
  • Fewer climbers may be on the mountain compared with the peak season, but conditions are less predictable.

Experienced trekkers who are comfortable with changing weather may still consider these periods. If this is your first high-altitude trek, choosing a generally drier window can make planning easier.

Which Month Should You Choose?

A practical month-by-month overview

  • January: A popular option for generally favourable conditions.
  • February: Often a good balance of relatively dry weather and manageable crowds.
  • March: Early March may be suitable, but rain becomes more likely as the month progresses.
  • April and May: The long rains make these months challenging for most climbers.
  • June: The main dry season begins, although conditions can still be cool and cloudy.
  • July and August: Popular months with generally dry conditions, but busy trails and very cold summit nights.
  • September: A strong option for relatively dry weather and potentially fewer crowds than peak holiday weeks.
  • October: Often favourable early in the month, with increasing uncertainty as the short rains approach.
  • November: Showers are more likely, and trail conditions can be wet.
  • December: Conditions vary; early December can be wet, while later dates may offer improving weather alongside holiday-season demand.

These are general seasonal patterns, not guarantees. Mountain weather can change quickly at any time of year.

What Else Should You Consider Before Booking?

The month you choose matters, but your route and itinerary are just as important.

Choose a route that allows enough time

  • Machame Route: A scenic, popular option with several itinerary lengths.
  • Lemosho Route: Offers a longer approach and itineraries that can allow more time for acclimatization.
  • Marangu Route: Uses mountain huts rather than camping tents.
  • Rongai Route: Approaches Kilimanjaro from the northern side, which can be worth discussing with your operator when considering seasonal conditions.

For many climbers, an itinerary of seven to eight days or longer provides more opportunity to acclimatize than a rushed ascent. No route or duration guarantees reaching the summit, and your guide should prioritise your safety.

Prepare for cold weather

Even during the drier months, the summit can be bitterly cold. Pack thermal base layers, an insulated jacket, waterproof clothing, warm gloves, a hat, and suitable hiking boots. Your operator should provide a detailed equipment list before departure.

So, What Is the Best Time for Your Kilimanjaro Climb?

If you want a straightforward recommendation, consider February or September. February often offers a good balance of weather and crowds, while September falls within the main dry season and may be quieter than the busiest mid-year weeks.

If your dates are fixed, don’t worry about finding a supposedly perfect month. Focus on choosing a suitable route, allowing enough days for acclimatization, training beforehand, and travelling with a responsible mountain crew.

Plan Your Kilimanjaro Climb With Lucky Wild Safaris

Climbing Mount Kilimanjaro is a demanding adventure that rewards preparation and patience. Lucky Wild Safaris can help you explore trekking options, compare routes, and plan a journey that fits your travel dates and experience.

You can also combine your climb with a wildlife safari in northern Tanzania or a relaxing stay in Zanzibar, depending on your schedule. Start planning your Kilimanjaro adventure with the right season, a sensible itinerary, and a focus on reaching the summit safely.

A note on altitude and preparation

Allow time for acclimatisation and discuss your health with a clinician experienced in altitude travel. Fitness does not prevent altitude illness. Tell your guide promptly about symptoms; do not keep ascending with symptoms, and worsening symptoms require descent and medical attention.

Read the CDC altitude travel guidance before arranging a climb.
