Mara River Crossing Tanzania: When, Where & How to Witness It

Landscape from our Tanzania travel collection
FROM THE LUCKY WILD PHOTO NOTEBOOK

The Most Dramatic Wildlife Event on Earth

Nothing in the wildlife world prepares you for a Mara River crossing. When thousands of wildebeest reach the river bank and the herd's collective fear and momentum finally overcomes individual hesitation, what happens next is an explosion of primal energy — animals plunging into crocodile-patrolled waters in a thundering, heaving, panic-driven mass.

Where to Be: The Kogatende Area

The best location to witness Mara River crossings is the Kogatende area in the Northern Serengeti — specifically the crossing points along the Mara River's southern bank where herds traditionally enter the water.

When Do the Crossings Happen?

The Mara River crossing season runs from approximately late July to mid-October, with the peak intensity in August and September.

Questions from the notebook

Is the Mara River crossing in Tanzania or Kenya?

The crossings happen along the Tanzania-Kenya border. The main Tanzanian crossing points are in the Kogatende area of the Northern Serengeti.

How many wildebeest cross the Mara River?

During the peak crossing season, hundreds of thousands of wildebeest cross the Mara River in multiple crossing events. The total wildebeest in the migration herd numbers approximately 1.5 million.

What is the best way to see the Mara River crossing?

Stay in a camp in the Northern Serengeti for at least 2 nights positioned near the crossing points. More time = better chances.
