Ndutu Calving Season: Tanzania's Greatest Wildlife Secret (January–March)

Landscape from our Tanzania travel collection
FROM THE LUCKY WILD PHOTO NOTEBOOK

What Is the Ndutu Calving Season?

The Ndutu calving season is arguably Tanzania's greatest wildlife spectacle — and one of the most overlooked. Between January and March, the wildebeest migration's 1.5 million strong herd arrives on the short grass plains around Ndutu in the southern Ngorongoro Conservation Area and southern Serengeti.

The Predator Spectacle

Ndutu during calving season is unlike anywhere else in the wildlife world. Lion prides move through the plains in a near-continuous state of hunting. Cheetah mothers teach their cubs to hunt, with almost daily kill sightings. Spotted hyena clans roam in packs of 20 or more. Leopards ambush from kopje boulders.

Why Fewer Tourists Know About Ndutu

Most international visitors plan Tanzania safaris around the Mara River crossings (July–October) — which are indeed spectacular. But the calving season at Ndutu from January to March is less crowded, equally dramatic, and in many ways more nuanced and photogenic.

Questions from the notebook

Where exactly is Ndutu?

Ndutu is located in the southern Ngorongoro Conservation Area on the border with the Serengeti. It is approximately 180 km from Arusha by road, or 40 minutes by charter flight.

Is January a good time to safari in Tanzania?

January to March is one of the best times to safari in Tanzania for wildlife action — the calving season draws spectacular predator activity and the green landscapes create beautiful photography conditions.

Can I combine Ndutu with Ngorongoro Crater?

Yes — and Lucky Wild Safaris strongly recommends this combination. Ndutu is just 30 minutes from the Ngorongoro Crater entrance.
