How much does a Tanzania safari cost?

Guide prices per person for every kind of trip we plan — and an honest look at what makes a safari cost more or less.

The short answer

From about $700 per person for a day trip, roughly $400–600 per person per day for a private mid-range safari, and from about $900 a day for luxury.

Prices below are “from” prices per person, for two people sharing, taken from our current itineraries. Your own quote depends on your dates, group size and the lodges you choose.

Group size matters

The bigger the group, the lower the price per person.

A private safari vehicle and guide cost the same whether two or six people travel, so sharing them brings the price down. For example, the 4-Day Best of Tanzania — Tarangire, Serengeti & Ngorongoro:

1 traveller$1,925

3 travellers$1,580

What changes the price

Five things that move your quote up or down

01

Season

July to October and late December are peak months. November and March to May bring lower lodge rates and quieter parks.

02

Comfort level

Mid-range lodges and tented camps keep costs moderate; luxury camps can double the price for the same route.

03

Group size

Sharing a private vehicle and guide between more people lowers the price for each traveller.

04

Flights

Flying saves days of driving and suits short trips, but light-aircraft seats add to the cost.

05

Number of parks and nights

Park fees are charged per person per day, so longer stays in more parks cost more — but extra nights also mean less driving.

Ways to save

Getting the most from your budget

  • Travel in the green season — the parks are lush, quiet and cheaper.
  • Choose fewer parks and stay longer in each one; it means less driving and more wildlife.
  • Mix comfort levels: a luxury night in the Serengeti and mid-range lodges elsewhere.
  • Travel as a group of four to six to share the vehicle and guide.
  • Combine Zanzibar beach time at the end rather than adding extra flights in the middle.

Safari cost questions

  1. What is the cheapest way to do a safari in Tanzania?

A short private safari from Arusha to Tarangire and Ngorongoro is the most affordable option. Travelling as a group of four to six lowers the price per person, and the green season (November, and March to May) brings lower lodge rates.

  2. Are park fees included in your prices?

Yes. Our guide prices include national park and conservation fees for the itinerary, your private vehicle and guide, accommodation, meals as listed and drinking water on game drives.

  3. Why are safaris from Zanzibar more expensive?

They include return flights between Zanzibar and the mainland, and often flights or longer transfers to the parks, so the price covers both travel and safari.

  4. How much should I budget for tips?

Many guests plan around US$20–30 per day for their driver-guide and a smaller amount for lodge staff, shared through the tip boxes most camps provide. Tipping is always your choice.

  5. Is a solo safari more expensive?

Yes, because the vehicle and guide are shared by fewer people and many lodges charge a single supplement. We can suggest routes and lodges that keep the cost down.
